So sad...

I was picking my niece up from school today and while I was waiting in the office, this mom came in to sign out her daughter. The daughter was probably 4th grade, maybe 5th. The receptionist asked why the mom was taking her out (it was 10:45 AM) and the mom said "I need to go to work and there's no one to pick her up later."

I am desperately sad that we live in a country where our working poor would have to do something like this. I'm sure this mom had no other options, but I am sad for that mom and for that little girl. The little girl who should, like my little girl, be running and playing at recess and having lunch with her friends and learning about something amazing, not going home to watch her brother while her mama works or going to a daycare center that won't pick up at the school.

Does your school have an after school program? It's nice when they have that at school so they don't have to worry about getting to somewhere else until their parent or someone can come and get them. Just curious!

And then I just realized that you were talking about your niece's school, so I guess that school needs an after school program! lol!

Our school does have one. I'm not sure about this other school. One thing though is that a lot of the regular daycares will take DES if she qualifies. Then you pay nothing or a very minimal amount for childcare. I'm not sure that the on campus after school programs offer that and then the cost, however minimal, might be too much for her. She obviously felt she had no choice...

They do have an after school program until 6 PM and DES does help fund it, but unfortunatly there is always a witing list for the Lion's Den.
