Emotional
Today was the last day of school for the Teenager. He's officially halfway done with high school. He'll be 16 in three weeks. And I'm not liking it one bit. Well, I take that back. Watching him grow is fascinating. I mean, he's the first born, the guinea pig child. Here I get to see which parenting techniques have worked and those which need to be reevaluated. He's also my first born. Born to me when I was 21 years old. A child myself. He was the best thing that had ever happened to me.
He has two years of high school left. Two years of being a minor. We all know how fast two years goes by. It's really hard to watch this child I've cared for every day for almost 16 years, and even before that, get ready to fly on his own. It's nothing you can understand until you are really there. It's a milestone like no other and I can't even really fathom it because we're not quite there. No platitudes help. No "it's okay you've got three more". I cannot imagine the day when I don't see him or speak to him every day, but I know it's coming. Far too soon for me...

You will have spent 18 years giving him wings and he will use them to fly on his own. I wonder how a mother bird feels when her little ones fly for the first time? I know it's not the same, but it must be an even bigger scarier world to them than it is to us....I'm rambling, but I guess I'm just trying to say, even though it's hard, don't forget to rejoice in it because flying on his own is what you've been preparing him for all these years. And I'm positive he'll return to the nest very often! :)
I wonder if that's how my parents felt when I turned 16. The guinea pig child always feels the weirdest. Not quite sure if the parents are rejoicing with us or not.
Let him know you are once and a while. He'll appreciate it.
