How Ridiculous!
The boy I care for during the day had Kindergarten "Graduation" today. Oh, for gosh sakes! I know this is a popular little ritual, but I so do not get it! as karin said this morning "What are they graduating from? Their first year of elementary school? They have 8 more to go!!!"
At our school, which is K-8, there is a really lovely wonderful 8th grade graduation ceremony and many events leading up to it. These kids have, at that point, been together for 9 years and are leaving to go to many different high schools. This seems cause for graduation. But, my understanding is, some schools call that 8th grade Promotion! So, the same set of schools that can have 5 and 6 year olds graduate from THE SAME SCHOOL THEY WILL BE AT NEXT YEAR, can't offer something more substantial to the kiddos who are moving on to a whole new world? Crazy!

You already know how I feel about this. Kindergarten graduation = dumb. I don't necessarily feel as strongly about the difference between 8th grade promotion and graduation as long as they give them some kind of ceremony, but it seems ridiculous for kindergarteners to have a graduation if 8th graders only have a promotion. I think it's just a way for the cap and gown companies to sell more crap. That's what I think. ;)
I just think it' fun for the kids, and never really much other thought into it. I look forward to Rachel's graduation tomorrow.
Janet, I'm sure if our school did graduations we would participate because that's what you do. It is fun for the kids, but ANY kind of party would be fun for them. it's really the whole concept of "graduation" from Kindergarten that is ridiculous. I mean why not graduate from 1st grade? or second, or third? etc.
well, for Rachel and a few others who have not been to school all day in kindergarten, it's like a milstone, for them to go from 1/2 day to full day, eat lunch at school, play on the big kid playground. ect. I don't get what differance the word makes, graduation or promotion, really to me it seems the same.
The promotion/graduation thing was in relation to 8th grade. How can 8th graders, who have actually had a long time school experience only be given a "promotion" when Kindergarteners are given a "graduation". But really, using the standards outlined, at our school a child would "graduate" from 2nd to 3rd grade because they go an hour longer. "graduate" from 3rd to 4th grade becuase then they lose a recess. "graduate" from 4th to 5th grade becuase they then move to the other side of campus. Deer Valley should do a 6th grade graduation because the kids move from grade school to junior high.
I guess we just see things differently here, but really, that's what makes the world go around. and wouldn't it just suck if everyone had the same opinion about everything? How boring that would be!
I agree that the 6th graders should get somthing cool. It's the same as 8th grade "promotion". They're moving on to a new school and new experiences. The whole "graduation" thing is dumb. I never got one. Does that mean I didn't pass kindergarten?
Then again, we've all seen my spelling.
