Why the World is Going to Hell in a Handbasket

Mark and I went on a date Saturday night. Dinner and a movie, as per usual, but that's what we like and it's too hot to do much of anything else. We were going to go see Get Smart, but looked at the wrong theater and due to some sangria and a swirled sangria margarita we were not able to drive to the correct theater. We ended up seeing Wanted, which is a movie basically about training assassins. It was actually pretty funny and had a good story line to it, but was completely entirely violent and very graphic. Slow motion shots of bullets through people's heads graphic. I hid my eyes through about 25 percent of the movie. Which made it all the more disturbing to me that there were children there. I'm not talking teenaged boys children, I'm talking 9 and 10 year old children, 4 year old children and toddlers. There were at least 10 children between the ages of 2 and 10 in that theater.

I was disgusted. You want to know why kids behave the way they do these days? It's partially because they see things that their brains can't properly process. It's because their parents are too immature to be parents. They can't see that showing this stuff to their kids causes it to take more and more to excite these children as they get older. I have a couple of thrill seeking kids myself. I can't imagine how much more thrill seeking they would be had they been exposed to that type of violence earlier. I'm just appalled, sickened and scared. And you should be too! Because they children that watch two hours of people getting shot in the head? They are in the same schools and churches and malls that your kids are, that my kids are. And their parents don't seem to care what they do.

Maybe some parents don't get how it watching violence would effect their children. They look at they want to see the movie, kids see the AD on TV, and they want to see it, and parents don't know how to say no.

If you don't know how to say no, then you shouldn't be a parent. Period. Marlene, you and I have talked about this ad nauseum, and you KNOW how pissed off it makes me when I see a kid at an inappropriate ADULT movie. The stupid theaters shouldn't let kids under a certain age into certain movies whether their egg/sperm donors are with them or not. And I don't care of it does impinge on people's freedom. If they're not intelligent enough to know what movies are inappropriate then someone needs to make it perfectly clear. Ugh.

I can see what you're saying Janet, but frankly, I'm a wee bit tired of excusing people for being stupid, or being bad parents. And taking a young child to a rated R movie? Is bad parenting. Period. No excuses.

Oh, and Karin, that is exactly what I said to Mark on Saturday. children should not be allowed in to rated R movies. Period. Because I doubt very seriously that any two year old said they wanted to see that movie.
