Exactly!!
Just for clarification: I am certainly not advocating leaving a 6 year old home alone. BUT, I think the author has some valid points about the obnoxiousness of the way we protect our children and do every darn thing for them. I don't think we do them any favors in the long run by doing every little thing for them or making sure every little thing goes their way.
Possibly the best blog post about parenting I've ever read.

I'm not sure I'd leave a 6 year old home alone. Espesially after seeing the Changling movie.
But I diffantly agree with too much over protecting children and not letting them fail and make mistakes.
I often think how sad it is that we live in what is perceived as such a scary world - so scary that we become more fearful than maybe we need to be. There was an article somewhere about a mom who let her 9 yo ride the subway by himself. And people absolutely freaked out. But you're so right that we do too much for them and try to make everything go their way all the time. And by "we" I mean the general we, not the specific...lol!
Here's the link to the subway story if you haven't seen it. I don't think I'd go so far as to leave my 6 yo alone at home or let my 9 yo ride the subway alone, but I think we as a society have become overprotective to a fault, and I can't say that I'm not myself. Definitely food for thought.
