Happy Thanksgiving!

There is much to be thankful for, as always, but first and foremost in my mind this week is thankfulness for my son not being hurt in the accident he was involved in, and my BIL's family not being home when their home was broken into today. Some precious things were lost, but all the people are okay and that's what is really important.

I'm also grateful for all my friends and family. You know who you are.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Praising God

Every parent with a child of driving age has this nightmare. The phone rings at 1 AM. Your heart is pounding. 1 Am phone calls are never good.
"Mom, I've been in an accident. I'm okay. Everyone in my car is okay."

"Where are you?"

"Just drive south on 43rd Avenue. There are a million flashing lights"

Mark and I hurriedly dressed, woke up SB just to let her know we were leaving, and fled the house. I was crying already. I had heard his voice at least, but what had happened, and was he really okay? I knew he hadn't been driving, but out with friends.

The scene that greeted us, in an ironic location: right next to Mark's parent's church and the grade school Mark attended, was chaotic and terrifying. The street was closed, for almost a full mile. We drove up to the police tape and told the officer that our son was in that accident. He directed us to park at the convenience store and walk in. There were close to a hundred people standing around farther down the sides of the accident. We walked a half-mile outside the tape lines. There were many police cars, fire trucks, ambulances. But we had missed the worst of it. We called Bubba since we couldn't see him. We were looking at the only car we could see so far. A tiny little red hatchback. The front passenger side window was smashed. The top of the car was caved in badly. There was debris all over the ground. We still have not seen Bubba, but he is on the phone with Mark. we tell him we can see the red car and where is he in relation to that? He says "That's the car I was in." My knees give out as I see the damage. We see another officer, who asks us which car our son was in. When we tell him, he replies that "Those boys were the luckiest of the bunch, but it's really a miracle they are walking away." When we see the other cars, we see why. A full sized pick up truck, down to about a third of its original size, completely upside down, and a smaller sedan, with the engine in the front seats. No one in either of those cars has walked away. They have all been extricated and rushed to hospitals. A woman standing on the street tells me she lives about a half mile away, but heard the crash and rushed up to see if anyone needed help.

The piecing together of the accident is something like this. The sedan is traveling north bound at what is now estimated to be 100 miles an hour. The truck is waiting at a stop sign to turn onto 43rd Ave. The boys are traveling down 43rd Ave in the opposite direction of the sedan, at 40 miles an hour. The truck pulls out in front of the sedan, the sedan jackknives the truck, the truck rolls and slides, hitting and rolling over the top of the car Bubba was in. It is a MIRACLE that all three boys were not killed. Or even injured beyond glass dust in their eyes and some minor aches and pains. Several police officers reiterate how lucky these boys are. Thank God.

I held that boy for a mighty long time at the accident scene. I had to keep touching him because the fact of him standing next to me, whole and unbroken did not reconcile with the pile of rubble I see in the street. I stroke his cheek, just a tangible reminder that he is okay, he is there beside me. I can't stop looking at him or touching him.

It was very early morning by the time we made it home. When i closed my eyes, all I saw was flashing lights, on and on. I slept the sleep of the dead, thankfully, with no dreams. When i woke this morning, the full enormity of the tragedy that might have been clamped down on my heart. Bubba was guarded by angels last night. of that I have no doubt.

How is this even possible???

I've been reading with great interest and disbelief articles pertaining to the safe haven law in Nebraska. You know the one, where several teenagers have been dropped off, including 5 17 year olds. I'm not saying there weren't days when dropping off a 17 year old might have seemed like a good idea (for 5 minutes. I never would have done it!lol!), but there's no way on earth that he would have STAYED!! That's what I don't get. What is wrong with these kids that they would stay like that when their parents dumped them. I know mine wouldn't. I'm even reasonably confident that the 7 year old would pitch the biggest fit known to man, much less the 10 and 13 year olds. And Bubba? Would have beaten me out of the parking lot.

Pathetic

It's a no school day around here! Hooray! No big plans, just some crafting and, of course, dance!

I realized this morning when I went grocery shopping what a pathetic life I lead. I mean honestly, when my adrenaline gets going the most right before the cashier totals my groceries, it's pathetic. But, I think grocery shopping has become a game for me. It's really fun to see how far I can stretch our grocery money, how much i can save, to hear the cashiers ooh and ahhh over how little I spend. I know some of you don't use coupons, but I'm thinking you're getting to be the minority these days. Every time I shop the cashier mentions how many more people are using coupons. And really? I spend about an hour a week getting my coupons and list together. And today? I made (or saved) $149 in that hour (which was FAR more than I spent!!). I think it's my responsibility to be a good steward of the money my husband works so hard for and this is one of the ways I contribute!

Getting Ready!

There are a few things I wanted done to the house before the big reunion party in December. Our weekends are pretty booked, so we have to eke out whatever time we can. Despite the fact that four members of this family have three birthday parties to attend today (all at virtually the same time) Mark and kiddos have managed to dig up my entire courtyard and refinish it. The bricks in the center were sinking, so they dug up all the brick, added new dirt and replaced all the bricks, along with trimming all the plants, digging up two tree stumps and replacing much of the decorative rock. We have a chimnea out there, so the plan is to have some seating out there (we have some but I'm buying more on Tuesday when Bubba, as an active duty military member, gets discounts at tons of places!) and a fire for more room. We'll also have seating on the back patio as well.
The party is really shaping up and I am so excited!!

Exactly!!

Just for clarification: I am certainly not advocating leaving a 6 year old home alone. BUT, I think the author has some valid points about the obnoxiousness of the way we protect our children and do every darn thing for them. I don't think we do them any favors in the long run by doing every little thing for them or making sure every little thing goes their way.

Possibly the best blog post about parenting I've ever read.

Reunion!

Through the magical powers of facebook, I've become reunited with many people I went to high school with, in particular my drama group, with whom I spent all of my time. Someone mentioned that, even though they live out of town, they were planning to be here for the holidays and the sparks started flying. We're now having a full blown reunion of 5 graduating classes of drama and/or speech people. Here. At my house! The week of Christmas. Because I had nothing else to do!

I am so beyond excited and joyful to see some of the people I've missed so dearly, but just have been unable to keep in contact with through the business of life. Hooray for reunions!!

It's A New Day

"It's natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again."-John McCain, November 4, 2008

I was sad last night. Not because McCain was my candidate of choice. Nor was Sarah Palin, although it was fun to watch. They were, in my opinion, the best option presented to us yesterday.
But today is a new day. And if we gripe and complain without ever giving our president elect a chance, then we are no better than the people who ragged on our current president incessantly. If we sit at home and whine and cry and watch the country fall apart and say "I told you so", we do a grave disservice to our children, our country and ourselves. We may not agree with everything that happens over the next four years, but unless we are working to make things better, then we are just as guilty as the people we voted against.

Voting Freebies!

I voted this morning, of course. Left my house at 8:45, was back by 9:05. Much of that time was spent waiting while Bubba voted. My heart was full watching my eldest child vote for the first time. He just turned 18 in June, so this was the first election he was eligible to vote in. He wouldn't let me take pictures though, darn it!

Don't forget your voting freebies today. Free coffee at Starbucks, free donut at Krispy Kreme AND free chicken sandwich and drink at Chik-Fil-A with your voting sticker! Woohoo!!

White Girls CAN Jump!

My favorite photo of the weekend, my girl leaping her way across the stage at the State Fair. We had an amazing time. Watching her dance was awesome. There were tons of people there and many stopping by and standing around watching and yelling and clapping. SB and her group danced two dances and the older girls danced some. I think the entire show lasted an hour. They were all the same songs they danced to at recital, but they've been reworking them since August, so the dances are somewhat different and definitely more polished.
After Sb danced, she wanted to ride some rides. She had never been to the fair. It's in a not so nice part of town and we haven't been since Bubba was about 3. But, really? I saw no problems. The place was packed with people, but everyone was friendly and nice. My FIL had asked me a month ago if he could come with us to watch SB and since Mark and the boys had other places they needed to be, I was glad for the company. We rode the sky ride and them SB and her grandpa went on the ferris wheel. We all rode the log ride and got soaking wet. We had goopy disgusting food you can only find at the fair. As we were riding the sky ride a second time, SB saw a place that sold Deep Fried Snickers bars. We had to go track it down once we got off the ride. Grandpa and I each tried a bite, but SB thought it was heaven on a stick! she said it was like donuts and a candy bar all mixed together. She asked if I could make them at home. Ummm...no. We'd all weigh 400 pounds!

Busy Day, but aren't they all?

Today is a crazy day with all of us needing to be different places at the same time!

It's our monthly church religious education program, which Mark and I are both involved in. Luckily, we have some control over the chain of events during the program, so life can be a little less stressful!
The program starts at 12:30, but we need to be there at 12 to set up. On the way there, i have to drop SB off at a friend's house so she can get a ride to the state fair where she is dancing today. I'm running in, doing the opening and my song and bolting out to get to the place where my FIL is meeting me to drive to the fair. (I'm really glad he asked about going because I did not want to go by myself!) While we go the the fair to see SB and Mark and FE are at the church program. The Princess has rehearsal for Snow Queen! Thank goodness for my mom! It's all so crazy!!
And, to top it off, Bubba has been out of town since Wednesday and is headed back today. he called to tell me when he'd be home and I had to break it to him that no one will actually be here!
It's one weekend where I'm actually looking forward to the week starting because, in all it's craziness, it's still less than this!
